Two weeks ago, Frontier Developments unveiled a new extension for its 2018 dinosaur park simulator Jurassic World Evolution. The “Return to Jurassic Park” expansion will allow players to experiment with fixing the problems of the original dinosaur park from films from the 90s. I went to Frontier Developments to get an extension and find out how ambitious this project is.
At this point, Jurassic World Evolution has released several packages released since launch, including three premium DLC dropdowns, seven dinosaur packages, and seven free updates. However, all these additions have occurred in the modern world of the Jurassic period.
“Return to Jurassic Park” does what is written in its name, giving players the keys to the famous gate of the Jurassic Park in the hope that you can solve the problems from the first film and direct the ship to the doomed theme park. In addition to presenting a completely new storyline consisting of seven narrative missions, Return to Jurassic Park returns original cast members Sam Neil, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum to play the roles of Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Suttler, and Dr. Jan Malcolm respectively .
“(The cast of the original cast) was relatively simple,” says game director Michael Brooks. “The most difficult thing was to plan them all so that we could record them on time. But in fact they seemed quite appropriate. Jeff, with whom we worked before, in any case, but Laura and Sam seemed very interested to take part and repeat their roles. They are such distinctive characters on their own, and bringing them into the game was good. "
Since Return to Jurassic Park occurs immediately after the events of the first film in Jurassic Park, the aesthetics are different from the aesthetics of the Jurassic World theme used in the main game. Some dinosaurs have new models, while others have new skins, similar to those in the 1993 film. The different structures you created are also more similar to the ones in the first movie. These visual changes are also available for use in all trials and in sandbox mode from the base game using 93 year mode.
“Obviously, we were fans of the original films, and the aesthetics between them (eras) were very different,” says Brooks. “This is what we often saw from the fans: they like the original films and they wanted to recreate the Jurassic Park, but with their looks, you obviously can't do it to the same extent. Initially, we thought to return to the past and take up the Jurassic Park, and this is what we are going to do with it. ”
Jurassic Park is less commercialized than Jurassic World, which means that you have new variables to consider. For example, viewing galleries for regular visitors have disappeared, like the monorail, but in their place are excursions and a helipad. In addition, although you can certainly create stores to keep customers happy, this is not necessary.
When I finally got my hands on the upcoming expansion, I was able to go through Mission 1 and Mission 6 to get an idea of what the players would do to try and fix the Jurassic Park. Each mission begins with a voiced dialogue between the main characters of the films. While we heard Goldblum returning to the role of Ian Malcolm in the main game, hearing him go back and forth with the characters of Dern and Neil is a pleasure.
The first mission requires me to restore the functionality of the various operations of the park. I do this by building a ranger base and assigning them various repair tasks. After everything worked again, I queued up tasks for the rangers (for example, capturing escaped predators) and set about exploring some bizarre new electric fences in motion, while I manually repaired the damaged guards. This mission is short, but it talks about how to help a problematic theme park reach its full potential.
While the first mission took very little time, the sixth mission was long thanks to several necessary excursions and egg-picking missions. My first mission is to add a new kind of dinosaur to the park, namely Compsognathus. You may remember these little guys who killed poor Dieter in the Lost World: Jurassic Park. Everything will probably go better this time, right? I will research Compsognathus and send an expedition team to find DNA for Compii. This effort takes multiple expeditions over a long time. While this happens, I perform general maintenance throughout the park, using rangers to replenish dinosaur feeders and treat sick creatures. In addition, additional tasks appear, such as getting a certain number of guests in the park or achieving a certain park rating in order to provide you with monetary rewards if you can complete them.
Finally, I acquired 75% of the genome for Compii and began the process of their elimination. Waiting for the hatch of eggs, I build an aviary for them with platforms for feeding carnivores and a small pond from which to drink. When they begin to hatch, I deliver them to the newly built pen, and the mission continues.
The next step in the mission is to build an aviary and fill it with pteranodons. These aerial reptiles are the main attraction for patrons, so if I want to raise my numbers, I need good DNA samples to work with. This means that he returned to the expedition. A slow burn gives me more time to do things around the park; I'm trying to increase the number of guests, so I add a few more latrines, new stores and lower prices for souvenirs. I do not notice any influx of numbers, but as soon as the construction of the aviary is completed and the first Pteranodons go flying, the numbers begin to gain momentum. I am typing in the numbers that the side mission gave me thanks to my new flying friends, but I need to be careful to move forward; storms can damage the aviary and release dangerous creatures.
For those who do not plan to spend more money on Jurassic World Evolution, Frontier is preparing the next batch of free content. In addition to the toilets (which customers will now need) that can be deployed throughout the park, your ranger teams can now be removed if they end up in dangerous situations. I saw it with my own eyes, awaiting the completion of the expedition during the mission of Pteranodon. I sent a team of rangers to try to contain the outbreak of bird flu among dinosaurs, only to be destroyed by a neighboring beast. Although rangers can launch rockets to distract aggressive dinosaurs, I think this team did not receive a reminder, and they paid dearly for it. I had to pay to hire a whole new team of rangers to replace them and pick them up where the expensive squad stopped.
Jurassic Evolution World: Returning to Jurassic Park acquires PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on December 10 for $ 20.
