The Laguna Beach women’s water polo team left no doubts on Saturday as to who should be ranked # 1 in Orange County and beyond.
The Breakers, ranked second in Orange County, sank the No. 1 Foothill 9-8 in the semifinal of the Santa Barbara Champions Tournament and then faced Newport Harbor 8-3 in the Dos Pueblos final at Goleta.
A week ago, Foothill beat Laguna Beach 8-7 in a non-championship game to lead the No. 1 county standings, but the Breakers (16-1) resumed first place on Saturday with their second title of winter tournament.
They also won the Bill Barnett Holiday Cup in late December.
In the semifinals, juniors Emma Lineback and Molly Renner each scored three goals for Laguna Beach, which led 9-7 before the Knights scored late.
Lineback added three assists and two interceptions while Renner obtained three exclusions.
In the final, Lineback, Morgan Van Alphen and Nicole Struss each scored twice.
Laguna Beach led 7-2 at half time.
Renner was selected MVP of the tournament while Lineback won all the honors of the tournament.
In another feat for the Laguna Beach program on Saturday, the Breakers’ junior university placed second at the Lady Brahmas Winter University Classic organized by Diamond Bar.
Newport Harbor beat San Marcos, seeded 9-8, in the other semifinal. Foothill beat San Marcos 12-4 in the third place match.
